There is magic in the way Sarah Vaughan finds her way around any song. The balla dis her private domain and she can curl herself around a phrase or a note as no one else can. The up-tempo son gis her joy and she can finger-snap her way through it as though she were some additionnal instrument in the arrangement. No matter what the song, Sarah’s superb musicianship is always evident and her mastery of the lyrics and their meaning obvious.

It may be an overworked phrase, and in her case an understatement, to say that Sarah sings with soul, but the term means more when applied to Sarah than perhaps to any other vocalist singing today. Her diction is flawless, her technique seemingly effortless, and yet, there isn’t a part of her that does not go into the delivery of a song.
