Some Basics About the Composer, Arranger, Performer…

BOB SZAJNER, Born 1938 Detroit, west side, started playing improvisational (jazz) music 1958 professionally recorded first album (this one) 1978 note the 20 year increments. A lot of ‘’dues paying’’ in between-sideman with early Roy Brooks, Charlie McPherson, Frank Isola, Louis Hayes et al. But foremost, listening is believing, the music on this album inherits its roots from swing, bebop, cool, progressive, contemporary, fusion, third stream, free form and of course all the originality inherent to a musicia, composer, anrranger…

Nown, an insight into the actual recording of this album. Possibly unique the compositions were extracted, based on merit, form a CONTINUOUS SET of approximately six (6) hours. The bassist and percussionist were given vital basics at the outset of each selection by the composer, pianist E.G. tonal center (key) if there was one, form (AABA – Blues – Free etc.), mood, number of bars, projected duration, tempo and then the three musicians played the original composition for the FIRST and ONLY take. Modern improvisation in its most spontaneous format !!

And now, how does one listen to this album ?
Keeping in mind the fact that the drummer and bass player NEVER EVEN HEARD the composition before, (let alone the chord progressions) listen for 1) interplay between musicians 2) spontaneous organized arrangements 3) improvisation in its most basic (probably pure) form…… last and also least 4) listen for errors.
